need a PC/desktop to track mobile phone?

Many iPhone spy apps either require a desktop computer be involved or advise that you won't get full functionality without it on the same WiFi network.  Do you require a desktop to be involved or is this truly a mobile solution?

  I have successfully installed the Copy9 spy app on my phone, without desktop or Wi-Fi of the same name at all. I downloaded the APK file of the Copy9 application and followed the installation instructions here.
